Why a free proxy is sometimes slower than a paid VPN

A free service routes traffic through a chain: your browser, a WireGuard hop, and then a public proxy candidate somewhere in the target country. Each hop adds a bit of latency that a direct paid VPN connection doesn't have.

The tradeoff buys two things a lot of paid options don't: no account, and no cost.
